Expert Team
Huw Palin, Director
Huw qualified as a chartered accountant in 1989 and joined the firm as a senior manager in 1999. He became a full partner in 2002. He joined the firm having spent 10 years post-qualification working as an audit and accounts manager for Ernst & Young in Cardiff.
He has extensive involvement in advising small and medium-sized enterprises on financial and business planning issues and has assisted many companies to expand their operations and improve their business processes.
He has much relevant experience in assisting businesses both to identify and obtain grant-funding from UK and European grant bodies. Huw is the Audit Compliance Director for the practice. He therefore acts as the “feed” in relation to resolving technical and ethical issues.
Colin Russell, Auditor & Technical Director FCCA
Colin Russell, joined the firm in 1990 prior and has been employed as a Senior Manager at BPU since 1997, and has recently been promoted to the position of Auditing and Technical Director. A Chartered Certified Accountant, Colin is responsible for the audit and accounts work for SME’s through to large groups and manages the audits of charities and large pension schemes with members in excess of 100. Colin will also have responsibility for further developing the firm’s specialist auditing services for charities and pension funds in addition to day to day responsibility for the firms technical standards.
Mark Aherne, Head of Tax
Mark gained his professional qualifications with Deloitte & Touche before moving to a regional firm to focus on owner managed businesses. He then joined the Cardiff office of national practice PKF where he was promoted to senior manager and gained significant experience in areas such as mergers & acquisitions, company reconstructions, employment issues and many other complex planning matters. Mark now heads our tax team of six and brings over 10 years experience focusing on owner managed businesses and SME’s. His role involves dealing with the more complicated tax compliance matters and complex tax planning issues for our clients, both corporate and personal.
Rebecca Watkins, Senior Accountant ACCA
Rebecca holds a B.A. (hons) degree in Accounting and Finance from De Montfort University in Leicester and is a fluent Welsh speaker. Rebecca qualified as a senior certified accountant in June 2006 and worked for Lloyds Bank and other accountancy firms before joining BPU in 2007. Rebecca has extensive experience working for clients in the third sector including Dcells and WCVA where she has prepared internal and external audits as well as completed systems analysis.
