Charities and Not-For-Profit

Charities, not-for-profit organisations, and social enterprises are unique and have particular financial and accounting requirements.

BPU understands the challenges facing this sector and has developed over the years a specialist team of charity and third sector accountants and business advisors.

Our specialist team provides expert charity accounting, business planning and advisory services and has a proven track record of success in helping this sector to excel at what it does best.

Our services to the charity and not for profit sector are wide-ranging and include:

  • Year end accounts and audit
  • Advice on computerised accounting systems
  • Specialist advice on VAT and other tax matter where appropriate
  • Operations and cost reviews to ensure the most efficient use of resources
  • Assistance with raising of finance (both grant and loan) for capital and revenue projects
  • Internal control recommendations to ensure your organisation is compliant and your trustees are safeguarded
  • Bookkeeping
  • Payroll

BPU acts as auditor and consultant to a number of charities. The firm, therefore, has a clear understanding and depth of knowledge of the issues affecting the not-for-profit sector and also the regulatory requirements involved. BPU has extensive experience in advising trustees on the requirements of the Charities Act (revised 2022) and the Statement of Recommended Practice (SOPRS) revised 2019.

BPU has worked with a range of charity and third sector clients to meet their future aspirations as well as the needs of client funding providers and stakeholders. BPU has extensive experience in the securing of funding from various sources including EU programmes as well as the necessary skills to ensure that clients benefit from audit, monitoring, and the setting up of financial recording systems that meet the grant funder’s requirements. We pride ourselves on being able to think creatively around problems that clients might face to ensure that good governance is installed within internal systems.

BPU has also assisted other clients in the operation of WEFO funded schemes with a range of services from the maintenance of accounting records, to assistance with completion of quarterly grant claims, to the completion of independent auditor’s reports.

The firm believes that value and impact is achieved through close client consultation and a deep understanding of the needs of the client, whether in the private, public, or third sectors.
