Outdated rules could dim UK's creative spirit, warns FSB

Small firms in the creative industries are ready to drive growth – but need a system that reflects the realities of modern work, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has warned.

The business group is suggesting ways to encourage more people to turn their talent into thriving businesses.

The FSB's ideas to help creatives include business rates reforms, better access to finance and support for those worried about how AI will reshape their work.

Three quarters of small creative businesses see the potential benefits from AI, but many are concerned about abuse of their intellectual property (IP) rights and how it will affect the long-term viability of their business.

Tina McKenzie, Policy Chair at the FSB, said: 'The UK's creative spirit has always been one of our greatest strengths, but that spirit can't thrive on talent alone. It needs a system that recognises the realities of modern creative work.

'We're also seeing new pressures emerge. AI offers incredible opportunities, but it's moving faster than the rules that protect the people behind the ideas.

'Creators are right to want clear safeguards around their work, their voices, and their images. Watermarks, voice and image rights, and stronger IP protection are all practical steps that would help keep originality protected and creativity alive.

'If we want the UK to stay a world leader in the arts, media and design, small firms and entrepreneurs have to be part of the plan.'
